Famous Old Recipe Oatmeal Cookies

3/4 c Shortening
1 c Brown sugar, packed
1/2 c Granulated sugar
1 Egg
1/4 c Water
1 t Vanilla
3 c Oats -- uncooked
1 c Flour
1 t Salt
1/2 ts Soda

Beat together shortening, sugars, eegg, eater and vanilla until creamy. Add combined remaining ingredients; mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls ontio greased coookie sheet. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350 deg) for 12 to 15 minutes. (For variety add chopped nuts, raisins, choc. chips or cooconut) Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
